On janurary 9th 2020 my family went to Vancouver Island for my mom’s birthday. The flight was around 3 hours. When we got there, it was raining and nobody was at any of the places we visited. Probably because they had school. The day we flew in, we went to Whole Foods for some food. We didn’t really do much, just sat around, ate, then went to bed .
The next day we visited Cathedral Grove, and it was still raining. The drive there was 2 hours and 15 minutes. The drive was really pretty. On the drive, I watched a few episodes of the new cheer show I’m watching called Cheer. As soon as we got out of the car, we realized how cold it was. We headed to the trail and walked almost all of it, but there were huge puddles of water and mud, so we couldn’t cross. We just went down the other path. There is a street you can cross and there is another path. We went to all 3 of them. The biggest trees were about 800 years old and are 250 ft. tall. These trees were survivors of a forest fires about 350 years ago. Also Europeans came and colonized, so they chopped down a bunch of trees.
Then we went to caves. We walked in the visitors center, and they said that one trail was available with a tour guide. They told us it was mainly heights and enclosed spaces and that is what everyone in the family is scared of. My dad and Lexi were like no way, I’m not doing that. Dad said “I will get stuck.” They told us we could watch a video of the caves. We watched it. It was only a couple minutes long, and then we were just going to go home, but the docent said, “There are some trails you can take to go to some caves that you can visit yourself.” So, we did but first, mom let us pick out some candy for the road. Me and Miley picked Twix, Mason got KitKat and Lexi got Smarties. Then we walked and found 2 caves, and we all went in them. It was so cool. The walls looked like a bunch of sparkles. The river was right under us, and the fog was level with us. It was so pretty, like a painting. When we started walking it was the most beautiful thing ever, and when we were crossing the bridge, a huge bald eagle flew right over our heads. I even got a video.
The day of mom’s birthday, we ate cake and ice cream. It was pretty good, and we went to a nature center . There was a trail that led up to the center, and it was a breathtaking walk. The center had a collection of animal specimen, keychains, stuffed animals, hot chocolate and tea. Mom ordered tea, and she let us get hot chocolate with whipped cream, and we all ate veggie straws. It was really good, but we had to let it cool for a long time because it was SO hot. Outside of the nature center, it was magnificent. We even saw and heard a bald eagle. Then we walked back on the trail. Mom said, “Woah! Look how shiny this wood is,” so we took some pictures of it.
Then we went to Whole Foods and got some groceries, but dad and I got chinese food, mom and miley got salads, and lexi and mason got Burger King. Whole food was where we went most of the time to eat. The whole family would get burritos. Mason would ask for a pumpkin pie. The chinese food was really good. When we got back to the AirBnb, we sat outside and watched a movie with blankets and snacks. Then I laid in bed and watched another movie, and me and lexi went to bed. The beds are really comfy. We all slept really well.
The house we rented was so cute and big. I loved it. Lexi and I slept together in a room, and everyone else slept in their own rooms. The kitchen was really cute, and in the back of the kitchen there was an outdoor couch where we would watch movies. There was also a pool and hot tub. Miley loved the hot tub. She went in it all the time. We always had lots of good snacks.
Then we went to this castle. It was the Dunsmuirs castle, and we learned a lot of cool facts. In the gift shop, I got fruity Mentos, and then so did everyone else. We also bought chocolate with toffee. I love toffee and fruity Mentos.
After the castle we went back to the AirBnb and rested, and I made lots of Tik Toks. The next morning we packed up and left. Even though it rained everyday, I recommend everyone should go to Canada because it is so beautiful and you can make tons of memories.
